Brief Industrial Profile of Lahaul & Spiti
District
1. General Characteristics of the District
Lahaul & Spiti district came into existence on lst July, 1960 with the headquarter at
Keylong. This district covers an area of 13,833 Sq. Km. and is the largest district of
Himachal Pradesh in size. It si located in the northeastem part of the state and is
bounded by district kullu in the south, Kangra in the southwest, Chamba in the west,
Jammu & Kashmir state in the north and Tibet in the east. Lahaul & Spiti district
consist of three sub divisions viz. Udaipur, Lahaul and Spitiwith the headquarters at
Udaipur, Keylong and Kaza. The district is declared as tribal area and is covered
under Integrated Tribal Development Programme. The district is thinly populated
having population of only 31,528 as per the population census of 201 1.
The economy of the district is predomibnantly agriculture based. About 80% of
the population is engaged in agriculture and its allied activities. Potato, Peas, Hops
and Seabakthorn fetch good price to the inhabitants in the district. Beside agriculture,
animal husbandary also play an important role in the life of the people in Lahaul &
Spiti. The entire area of Lahaul & Spiti remains under snow from November to April
each year. The climate is dry temperate, which is suitable for cultivation of apples,
dry fruits and hops. Due to the geographical factors and bulk of workforce being
engaged in agriculture and its allied activities, the district is industrially most
backward in the state.
1.1 Location & Geographical Area.
Lahaul & Spiti district covers the 13,833 Sq Kms or 9,1 1,165 Hectares area. To
its south is situated the beautiful valley of Kullu across the Rohtang Pass and the Bara
Bangahal across the “Asakh” pass (505lMtrs) . its eastern and south eastern boundaries
coincide with those of Spiti and Wcstem Tibet across the Kunzom Pass. To its north
situated the valleys of Zanskar and Ladakh across Shingola and Baralacha la
respectivelylts western boundaries touch the Pangi and Churah areas of Distt. Chamba.
1.2 Topography
The topograpohy of the district is entirely hilly. The altitude of the district from mean
sea level lies at 10,050 feet. Lahaul & Spiti is situated at an altitude of 3340 m. in the
north eastern corner of Himachal Pradesh. The valley of Lahaul is situated to the south of
Ladakh. For this very reason this place derived its name “Lho-Yul” meaning “Southern
Country“.

1.4 FOREST
Lahaul and Spiti district has been divided into two forest diovisions viz. Lahaul
forest division with the headquarter at Keylong and Spiti forest division with the
headquarter at Kaza. The climate of major parts of the district is not conducive
for growing the natural trees due to which the major forest resources in the district
are not available. However some timber trees are available in the lower parts of
the district and the people of the area has already started planting buel (lacal
name) which meets the need for fuel and fodder for the cattle. Saru trees are also
available which acts as the means of fuel and its leaves are also used as dhoop on
the special occasions. On the other side the district is rich in minor forest produce
such as patish, karu, kalazira, dhoop, panza, hyphopia etc. The Spiti block being
a cold desert has a negligible forest. Total forest are in the district is 1.37.376
hectares.
1.5 Administrative set up.
Lahaul and Spiti district which covers an area of 13,833 Sq. Kms. consists of
three sub divisions viz. Keylong, Kaza and Udaipur. The district has two Tehsils
viz. Lahaul at Keylong and Spiti at Kaza and one sub-Tehsil named Udaipur.

There are two Development blocks in the district viz. Lahaul and Spiti. The
district has 41 Gram Panchayats and 521 Villages.

2.1 Existing Status of Industrial Areas in the District Lahual &
Spiti
There is no Industrial Area in Lahaul &Spiti.
3.INDUSTRIAL SCENARIO OF Lahaul & Spiti
Lahaul & Spiti district which is the tribal district of Himachal Pradesh, is
industrially under developed. There are very few industrial enterprises in the
district on account of topographical constraints and severe climatic conditions.
Most of the industrial units as given in the subsequent sections, are handloom
based units such as shawls, caps, patti and other woolen garments manufactured
on handloom. There are 400 industrial enterprises registered in the district out of
which 328 are working, providing employment to 640 persons.

There is no large scale industry/Public Sector Undertaking in the district as it is the tribal
district of the district.
3.5 Major Exportable Item
Since the district is tribal and remain inaccessible for more than 7 months in a year, there
is no exportable item in this district.
3.6 Growth Trend
The growth of industries in the district is negligible as is evident from the above tables
The reason for the same is that the district is entirely tribal district and remains
inaccessible for more than 6 months in a year.
3.7 Vendorisation I Ancillarisation of the Industry
There is no scope for vendorisation/ancillarisation in the district.

3.8. Medium Scale Enterprises
There is no medium scale enterprise in the district.
3.8.1 Major Exportable Item
There is neither major exportable item nor minor exportable item in the district.
3.9 Service Enterprises
The population of the district is very less. Most of the people of the district have double
establishment and migrate during the winter to Kullu district. Hence there is very little
scope for the service enterprises to be established in the district. However, on the basis of
tourists visiting the district during the summer season, the potential service enterprises as
given at 3.9.1 has scope of developing in the district.

be set up in the district.
